Jennifer Pickering

Control - 2010

Jennifer Pickering is a visual artist and a graduate from the MFA studio arts program at the University of British Columbia. Her work has been exhibited at various solo and group exhibitions in Western Canada and in the Free Manifesta; Manifesta 4 in Frankfurt, Germany.

Jennifer questions specific objects and institutions that are important to the circulation of knowledge. In her work, familiar mass-produced objects become references through which the viewer can consider their own placement within this complex exchange.

Control is a freestanding language-based sculpture, 12 feet long by 5 feet tall using remote controls, Remote controls are familiar domestic objects designed to ease access to technology. The remote offers convenience and the illusion of power through access to the multi-channel universe. However, this access is limited by prevailing illusions, which underlie the majority of commercial and institutional messages.
