Jordan Bennett - Pavement and Pattern

June 15 2012 - July 28 2012

Pavement and Pattern is the first major exhibition of one the nation’s most exciting young Indigenous artists today, Jordan Bennett. Featuring an array of mixed media works surveying the first five years of Bennett’s lively artistic career, the exhibition will center on the artist’s fascination with the intersections of the many worlds he inhabits, and his passion for making art that seamlessly imbricates the many layers of his daily life. His works simultaneously reference such seemingly disparate elements as traditional beadwork, board sport culture, ceremonial practice, and graffiti aesthetics, challenging dominant notions of what it means to make “Indian” art in a postcolonial context and questioning the prevailing, if somewhat obscured, essentialist notions of North American Indigeneity that still exist across the country today.
