9th Annual Wearable Art Gala

Saturday March 31, 2012 at 7pm

Thank you to the artists, volunteers and sponsors.

On Saturday March 31, over 50 artists captured the eyes, ears and noses of guests at the Wearable Art Gala. Artists blended art, design, fashion and sheer spectacle, creating works designed for audience interaction. As the artists moved off stage and into the audience, they ignited the senses of over 250 guests. Guests were invited to experience their works up close, to touch and taste the art. Master of Ceremonies Michael V. Smith set a flamboyant tone for this ever-popular community event while SPL Sound Productions, DJ Mark Mishadow and VJ Arthur CrazyMonkey immersed the audience in colour, imagery, light and sound, creating a full sensory experience.

Following the show, DJs CariZmic, Mark Mishadow, Lefrog and Filter Funker created a funky rich vibe, packing the dance floor with performers and guests. The Kinshira performance troupe, VJ Arthur CrazyMonkey and flamboyantly costumed shadow dancers created sound and visual projections to unite and excite keeping afterparty guests entertained till the early morning.

Congratulations to the winning artists:

Peoples' Choice: Music Crazed - Lauren Bell. Materials: Velvet, leather jacket, CDs, cardboard boxes, record. Description: Shattered CDs all over, studded, hat/head piece.

1st place: Sun Kissed City - Fashion Design students from the Centre for Arts and Technology. Kelowna comes to life in this wearable art piece. This creation displays all of our city's most famous attractions, from the legendary Ogopogo to our snow peaked mountains, rolling vineyards, and majestic lake. All of this beauty is warmed under the beautiful Okanagan Sunshine.

2nd place: Recreation - Jessica Dennis. Materials: Bone, antler, metal, feather, leather, flowers, branches, pine needles. Description: Nature's spine connects with us all, representing how the natural world supports each living being. Yet all is not well and faces block the view of destruction, diverting our attention to the inner self.

3rd place: Armor for Shimshom - Tim Smith. Description: Subverting our love of soft, comfortable wearables, this piece is constructed of hard industrial materials. These are materials, which have contributed to the soundscape of our cities while building mass and space.

Special thanks to all of the participating artists:
